Susan,
This advice will be especially helpful when relating to my kids. I love crafts, especially scrapbooking. To keep these words in a useful place, I plan to make a mini scrapbook with these tips, incorporated with pictures of my kids.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Lauren! You don't have to do all of this at once! Practice using one phrase at a time! Try it for a week and see what happens. Check out my suggestion to David on how to approach practicing a new skill.

A fun way to help learn any new skill is to carry something with you as a reminder. I've advised people to wear a particular piece of jewelry, put a sticker on their notebook, choose a wallpaper for their cell phone, etc that will remind them to use their new skill. Keep it visible at the most important times, like when having a crucial conversation, attending a meeting or making a presentation. It really works!

Have fun practicing!

Thanks David! An interesting approach to practicing something new is to keep a log. Pick one of the 9 phrases that you feel will add the most value to your relationships and practice using it for a week.

Observe these three things: 1. How you felt 2. How the other person reacted and 3. if the dialog was more peaceful and outcome oriented. Then just jot down a few notes at the end of each day and see how it made a difference or what you would change next time.

It's a wonderfully simply, yet effective way to reinforce and validate learning!

Wonderful guidance, Susan. #2 reminds me of one of my favorite quotes: "Do, or do not. There is no try." I'd like to add this to the "but" suggestion: people only hear what follows the "but" and do not hear what comes before it :)
